Chapter 10

For a moment, I was totally thrown.

That wasn’t at all what I’d expected the guy to say, but he was looking at me with such an awkwardly excited expression that I had to answer him.

“Uh, yeah,” I said. “We’re the Good Pirates.”

“Oh, my god.” The guy jumped to his feet so quickly that the legs of his chair scraped across the floor with an ear-splitting squeal. “Betty! Betty! Oh, my god, Betty!”

“Keith?” A woman at a table a little further away looked around with a puzzled look on her face. “What is it?”

“Betty, these are the Good Pirates!” Keith was smiling at us so widely that his face must have been aching.

“For goodness sake, Keith, what are you talking about?” Betty complained in a strong Southern accent.

“The Good Pirates, Betty!” Keith’s voice rose into a shout. “They’re here!”

Betty’s mouth dropped open, and her eyes went wide with recognition.

She pushed her chair back and almost ran from her table to come over to ours. She peered intently around at all of us like we were animals in a zoo.

It wasn’t a very comfortable feeling, and I glanced at the captain to see if he would intervene.

The captain looked back and raised an eyebrow, and then he raised his hand in a calming gesture.

“Betty,” he began, but the woman cut him off.

“Oh, my god!” she exclaimed, and then she jabbed a finger into Marley’s face. “And you! I recognize you! You did that other video, didn’t you? On the beach?”

“Uh, yeah,” Marley said.

“Betty,” the captain said in a firmer voice. “These people are our guests, and we all want to enjoy our meal.”

“Laaawwwwd,” Betty breathed. “The Good Pirates.”

“Betty,” Captain Roberts said. “I’m sure our guests will be happy to speak to you later, but right now, we are eating.”

“No, you ain’t,” Betty said in a rude tone. “The dishes ain’t out yet.”

Right on cue, the doors at the end of the dining room opened, and several waiters came out wheeling trolleys full of covered dishes.

“Betty, please.” The captain gestured with his hand.

Betty huffed out a sigh.

Rather than go back to her original table, she yanked out a chair next to Keith and sat her ass down where she had the perfect view to stare at us all throughout the meal.

“My apologies,” the captain said. “The Good Pirates has become a favorite channel for everyone on board.”

“Really?” Despite Keith and Betty’s rudeness, the knowledge that people on this boat had been watching our videos still made a warm feeling form in my stomach.

I knew the videos were popular, of course– the channel’s subscriber count was in the millions– but it was a different experience to see the excited faces of people in real life who knew who we were.

“Of course,” the captain said. “Many of the passengers and crew have given up watching the regular news channels and rely entirely on your channel to keep updated with what’s going on in the world outside.”

“That’s pretty cool,” I admitted. “It’s always nice to know we’re succeeding in what we set out to do.
